My story

My name is Stefan, I’m German, 20 years old, and in September 2024 I embarked on the journey of my life.

So far, I’ve made it all the way to Ecuador – hitchhiking a wild variety of vehicles along the way. It all started with the good old thumb on the side of the road. I made my way to Gibraltar, where I managed to hitchhike a sailing boat across the Atlantic. I had never sailed before, so it turned into an epic adventure full of lessons and unforgettable moments. From there, I caught another sailing boat to Trinidad, and then I managed to hitch a ride on a cargo ship to Guyana. And yes... they even let me steer!

Reaching South America without taking a single flight was a huge dream of mine. But now I’ve set my sights on something even crazier: I want to be one of the very few people who have hitchhiked all the way to Antarctica.

I’m eager to join any expedition that brings me to Antarctica — and beyond.
Whether it’s a loop from Ushuaia or a voyage that heads further across the oceans to Africa or New Zealand, I’m ready to contribute, learn, and be part of an amazing crew.

Sailing & Helping hand

Although I started this journey with no sailing experience, I was fortunate to find three different captains who were willing to teach me how to sail and helped me getting closer to my destination. All the boats I sailed on were monohulls between 38 and 50 feet.
From the beginning, I enjoyed night watches and later also trimmed the sails and hand steered the boat through some rough conditions using the stars to keep our course. While our Atlantic crossing was mostly smooth thanks to warm weather and steady trade winds, I sometimes prepared meals while facing house-sized waves and squalls reaching up to 45 knots. I’ve sailed around 5,000 nautical miles so far — still a beginner in many ways, but every mile has taught me something new.

Filmmaking & Photography

What started 13 years ago with a camera in hand has grown into a true passion for visual storytelling. Along the way, I’ve polished my skills in cinematography, editing, and narrative — always chasing the kind of moments that deserve to be remembered.
Since leaving Europe, I’ve been traveling with my cinema camera (Lumix S5), a DJI drone, and everything needed to capture our journey in cinematic quality. Whether it’s crashing waves, raw moments at sea, or the quiet beauty in between.

Adventurous Soul

I bring a strong spirit of adventure, a calm head under pressure and willingness to work hard and learn fast. I'm used to extremes as I did a lot of challenges to leave my comfort zone. I’ve spent four days on a tiny island trying to build a raft to escape, hiked off-trail through deserts, and built shelters in the woods to stay alive. I’m also into extreme sports, so physical and mental challenges are nothing new to me... Also I don’t mind getting cold, wet, or tired as long as I’m part of a crew heading somewhere extraordinary.

General

I speak fluent English and German, as well as good Spanish and understandable French. When it comes to timing, duration, and destination, I’m completely flexible. I’m easy-going and low-maintenance, as I’m used to budget travel. Since I’m looking for a real, hands-on experience and not just a paid trip, I’m only able to cover my share of the costs. But I’m confident that I’ll bring value in unique ways. It doesn’t matter what kind of boat or expedition it is — as long as we set foot on Antarctica. If you’re open to it, I would love to document the journey. Creating a film about this adventure is a dream of mine, and I’d be happy to share the material with you. I’m also open to discussing creative ideas for the project together.
